Katy's Special Day Sunday Katy went home with Judi, her adopter. For the first time in more than a year (and maybe ever!) Katy shared a bed with a human. Judi reports that Katy was been a dream so far — going potty outside, lying next to her chair when she works, and trying very hard to be attentive to Judi's directions. Why so long to find a home? Katy is black, 4-5 years of age, a pit-lab mix…and when she came in, very dog reactive. (Usually this is based in fear, her fear of other dogs attacking her first so she goes on the offensive with them..attacking them). Our trainers worked with her, our volunteers walked her, and one volunteer started pairing her with different high energy male shelter dogs and running them together off leash (with gps tracking collars). He worked on getting out in front of Katy's initial reactivity, telling her in no uncertain terms that he was in charge and there was going to be NO problems between the two dogs. Katy learned to listen and to relax her offensive-defensiveness…. We must have 20 videos of Katy over her year-plus stay with us. The 3 principal humans in these videos all came to the shelter to help in this adoption. Off hours, on a Sunday, behind closed doors, Katy started the first day of the rest of her life…with Judi.
