volunteer-with-animalsFor each displaced animal that comes to BrightSide Animal Center, there is an opportunity for animal shelter volunteers to provide exercise, socialization, cleaning, grooming, fundraising, and fostering to help make animals healthy and friendly pets for their permanent new homes. There’s also a need for volunteers at the Thrift Store and at offsite adoption events. At the shelter, there are office tasks, building maintenance, public relations and many more opportunities. Every volunteer is important and essential. Becoming an animal shelter volunteer takes time and commitment, and the rewards are immeasurable.

Consider joining our Dog Buddy volunteer program so that every dog, every day gets a walk or play time with a human. It’s good for the dogs, and good for you. It’s a fun way to exercise!

Who can be an animal shelter volunteer?

Persons age 16 and older may volunteer. Children and teens ages 12—15 may volunteer if accompanied by an adult. For the Dog Buddy program, volunteers must be at least 18 years old; children and younger teens are not permitted to walk dogs or to accompany dog-walking volunteers.

Where and how to apply

You can fill out an application at the shelter, 1355 NE Hemlock Ave., Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Or download an application and submit to our mailing address: BrightSide Animal Center, PO Box 1404, Redmond, OR 97756.

Volunteer orientation

When your application is received, the volunteer coordinator will contact you with the time and date of the next session. At the orientation you will take a tour of the facility, meet the staff and other volunteers, and sign up for training.

Each opportunity to volunteer with animals requires some training. A member of the staff or a volunteer mentor will give you instructions and tips on how to do the jobs you have chosen. It’s important that you do the things you like to do and with which you are comfortable.

The next big step

Report for duty. Remember, your commitment to be on time and to do your best at your assigned tasks helps give each animal the best chance for a permanent new home.
