Today all of us at BrightSide Animal Center are deeply saddened by the loss of a respected colleague. Dr. Cheryl Byrd of Bend, our staff veterinarian since 2009, died March 15 of natural causes.
Dr. Byrd, always a strong advocate for animals, performed thousands of spay/neuter and other surgical procedures on not only BrightSide’s animals, but those of the public as well, and provided all the animals with excellent medical care.
Prior to joining BrightSide, Dr. Byrd practiced at the Emergency Pet Clinic in Temecula, CA for 16 years, the last 11 of them as Medical Director. She graduated from the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. Dr. Byrd was instrumental in changing the curriculum there to a no-kill policy for veterinary training. That policy continues as a result of her advocacy. In 1988, she was named Biology Student of the Year at California Polytechnic State University, from which she graduated summa cum laude that year with a B.S. in biology.
Dr. Byrd is survived by her brothers, Craig and Brian. Please join us in extending our deepest sympathies to Dr. Byrd’s family and friends.
